The Extinction of the Bandoneon
Exploring Buenos Aires and getting to know
the local people exposed us to some hidden insights. One of
their concerns was the extinction of the Bandoneon in
Argentina.
"More than a century has passed since the
Bandoneons arrival to Rio de la Plata. Over the past ten
years the exportation of these instruments as souvenirs has
increased to concerning levels. The shortage in supply has
pushed prices beyond the reach of many locals. The
instruments affordability is now a national problem in
Argentina.
The Bandoneon is seen as a key tool for
the expression of musicians, the survival and evolution of
tango and the strengthening of Argentinean culture
identify."
During the 10th Tango Festival in Buenos
Aires, people signed a petition to save the Bandoneon
through the work of the Civil Association La Casa del
Bandoneon. |
