November 2006

Dear Tango Aficionados,

We have a few events and articles to share with you this month - Dancing, Musicals, Film Festival and our special Tango 'Black tie' event this December.

More and more new faces are emerging in the Tango scene. Its great to see some young adults getting into the action too. Thumbs up to the established tango dancers who have made the new students feel comfortable by dancing with them and helping to build their confidence! After all... TANGO is meant to be shared by all.

Emotional Intelligence & the TANGO!

Have you ever wondered about the profound connection that we often feel when dancing with another person?

A recent article endorsed by emotional intelligence expert Daniel Goleman highlights the discovery of "mirror neurons" and how this widely dispersed class of brain cells give us the ability to track the emotional flow and movement of another person.

This research suggests that there is a "tendency of one person to catch the feelings of another, particularly if strongly expressed." As a form of self expression and creativity, it's no wonder two people can create magic when they connect during a tango.

Furthermore, this connectivity "can offer a biologically grounded emotional solace. Physical suffering aside, a healing presence can relieve emotional suffering". Such findings support the idea that connecting with others greatly impacts our physical and emotional well being.

Next year marks the 30th anniversary since the formation of Surkaran, first known as Sonido de los Andes. With Papalote, they were one of the pioneering bands of Latin American Andean folklore.

Surkaran plays a blend of folkloric music from South America encompassing countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Chile. Played on traditional instruments, including the zampona ( pan pipe ), quena, moxceno, charango,  tiple, cuatro, bass, guitar, bombo, congas, bongos, chac chacs. Surkaran performances take you on a musical journey throughout South America with unique vocal arrangements and precise musical execution of these exotic instruments.
