CANDOMBE'S INFLUENCE ON THE
TANGO |
|
 |
|
Many
would argue about the exact origins of tango.
However, when we look at the society and culture of
that time, it can help us understand the factors
that may have influenced the unique sound of 'TANGO'
as we know it today.
The
arrival of African slaves in Uruguay during the
eighteenth century brought with it a percussion
based rhythm originally used for African rituals.
The music became a way to express their sorrow and
nostalgia for their homeland.
During colonial times, the Africans called their
drums 'Tango'. As an extension of this, the place
they would gather to dance to the drums was also
called 'tango'.
This African rhythm became known as the Candombe. However at the end of the 19th century
Uruguay's white population banned Candombe on the
grounds of immorality. They enforced harsh punishments
in a bid to eliminate the "tango of the blacks".
Later that century, the abolition of slavery and
documents enforcing these rules was lifted.
Candombe survived and became a part of Uruguayan
culture. In Montevideo the Candombe merged with
other cultural influences to create the musical
styles of the Tango and the Milonga. |

"Congratulations on organising
such a good event. The tango dancers had fun together and the
onlookers seemed to enjoy the show - we didn't even notice how
cold the winter's night was."

Deepest Condolences
To
the family and friends of Dario Palermo who has passed away.
Dario was the great bandaneon player of La Cambalache. He will
be sadly missed. |

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"The tango is
not a dance but an obsession. For the tangueros it is as much a
part of life as eating and sleeping. Passionate, haunting and
melancholy. It involves not only the body but also the soul".

TANTALISING TANGO IN CHATSWOOD |
|
This was the headline in the North
Shore Times describing A Little Buenos Aires 'Tango in Street'.
Indeed, we found ourselves amidst the fairy light adorned trees,
smelling the aroma of delicious cuisines from Chatswood's Melody
Markets and amongst a group of very curious people waiting to
witness the phenomena of tango.
Thank you to those who ventured
into the cold to support and dance with us. It seems as though
we had so much fun that we had forgotten we were in the middle
of winter. Perhaps that's what it means when we find ourselves
"lost in tango".

MEMENTO FROM JUNE'S MILONGA |
|
 |
|
Tango is unique in itself - it
belongs to the dancers.
When you dance Tango, it is your moment. We have to respect
individuality because the magic that each of us finds in tango
comes from within ourselves. We hope that tango will be a dance
of peace, where every individual has his/her own place. |
