JANUARY 2006

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's wonderful to have had a short break but now we're refreshed and ready to leap into a New Year of TANGO!  Having kick-started 2006 with our New Years Day celebrations at "Nuevo Tango Junction", January will burst into a buzz of activities with all classes and regular events resuming as normal.

This month we also have "Summer Tango at Manly Corso" - a special event at Manly's amphitheatre for families and friends to enjoy live tango music and dancing. We welcome everyone!

We wish you all a year filled with opportunities, experiences and magical tango moments.

SUMMER TANGO AT MANLY CORSO
Manly Corso recently celebrated '150 years' since it was first founded by Henry Gilbert Smith. Named after a famous street in Rome, the corso was little more than a boardwalk for the early tourists. Today, it is filled with restaurants, cafés, concerts and attractions.

This summer 'A Little Buenos Aires' and 'Orquesta Tipica Tiempo de Tango' brings you 'Summer Tango at Manly Corso'. This is a special event for tango enthusiasts to enjoy FREE live entertainment. Seize this wonderful opportunity to dance to a live tango orchestra... in the heart of Manly.

Note for the Diary:
'Summer Tango at Manly Corso' is a FREE outdoor event that will take place on Sunday 22nd January 2006 from 2pm - 4pm. We welcome all dancers!

RESEARCH FINDS:
“Our findings suggest that tango may be better than walking for improving the execution of complex tasks and the ability to move within a restricted area without losing one’s footing,” says Patricia McKinley, PhD.

Tango dancing is beneficial to the elderly, says McKinley, because it incorporates elements found in standard neurological rehabilitation programs: forward, backward and side-to-side weight shift; one-legged stance; walking on a straight line both backwards and forwards; increasing step length in all directions; and turning within a narrow space.

“An added benefit of tango is that its movements are performed to music, which is known to facilitate performance of ambulatory activities,” says McKinley.

PIAZZOLLA FOR FOUR HANDS by PABLO ZIEGLER & CHRISTOPHER O’RILEY

“Ziegler takes the tango to levels of sophistication and refinement probably undreamed of by Piazzolla.” Chicago Tribune

Born in Buenos Aires in 1921, Astor Piazzolla transformed the tango of his native land. Bringing large scale structures of classical music into tango, he developed a completely fresh approach which fused classical music and jazz with the traditional Argentinean national dance sounds.

In 2006, Pablo Ziegler and Christopher O’Riley will join forces in an evening celebrating the ‘new tango’ music of Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla. In three concerts, the pair will showcase their extraordinary talents in a dynamic and dazzling romp across the keyboards, taking Piazzolla’s classic tango to new levels of sophistication and refinement.
