Tango Musicality Handbook - "Tango: Let's Dance to the Music"

Musicality has always been a significant part of our dancing and teaching. During our last trip to Buenos Aires we spent time with Professor Joaquin Amenabar exploring musicality to greater depths.

Professor Amenabar is a world class bandoneon player. He has toured the USA, Istanbul, Australia, New Zealand, and several countries in Europe. He trains and directs, tango groups and musicians on tango interpretation and arrangements as well as teaching composers how to write for Bandoneón in Argentina and abroad.

Professor Amenabar has recently visited Sydney to launch his book at the International Tango Festival, Sydney. His book Tango: Let's Dance to the Music underscores musicality as the key element in tango. It's a step by step guide that will benefit tango dancers in many aspects. The book includes video and audio for practice and also planning for choreography.

"His method doesn't use any technical musical language at all. It allows the dancers to learn and incorporate to their dance all the different rhythmic units of tango music, from the simplest to the most complicated ones using a simple dancer's vocabulary."

'A Little Buenos Aires' presented Argentinean Culture by showcasing Tango at  Multicultural Concert organised by St Ives Lions Club. Well done to our team of dancers who put on a fun and enjoyable exhibition!

It's an important event to support the work of Father Chris Riley who founded the YOUTH OFF THE STREETS program in 1991. All proceeds will help Youth off the streets provide meals, crises care, refuges, schooling, drug and alcohol programs to homeless youths.

Argentina and Uruguay united to preserve Tango!

For many years, Argentina and Uruguay have fought over the rights to claim the world's most famous tango singer Carlos Gardel as their native son. Now the two countries have suspended their long standing feud to persuade UNESCO that Tango should be added to its intangible cultural heritage list.

Argentina and Uruguay, embroiled in a clash over the birthplace of the great tango crooner Carlos Gardel, have kicked aside their differences to persuade UNESCO to give tango protected cultural status.

A United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation  committee was scheduled to meet in Paris to consider their petition to add the music and dance to the intangible cultural heritage list, alongside India's Vedic chanting and Japan's kabuki theatre.

Carlos Gardel

The designation comes with no money. But an international seal of approval would help the governments of Argentina and Uruguay justify using public funds to preserve their most famous export next to beef.

Both countries have proposed creating a Rio de Plata tango orchestra, names for the river basin the two countries share, cataloguing thousands of unregistered songs and possibly establishing official tango academies throughout the world to keep that dance and music an art form uncorrupted by fad.

Argentina and Uruguay agree they're co-creators of the dance. But their Gardel feud is as heated as ever. Both countries claim the world's most famous tango singer and composer as a native son, whose popularity and legend have only increased since he died in 1935 in a plane crash in Medellin, Colombia.

Argentines say Charles Romuald Gardes was born in 1890 in Toulouse, France to Berthe Gardes, a single mother who took her boy to Buenos Aires, where he later adopted the artistic name Carlos Gardel.

Uruguayans say Gardel was born in 1887 in Tacuarembo, a small town in the north, the out-of-wedlock son of a local military strongman and his sister-in-law, who handed off the child to Berthe Gardes. Both sides say they have the documents to prove it.

Now Argentina and Uruguay have suspended their long-time fight to ensure that the tango is given a protected status by UNESCO.

Carlos Gardel (1887 Uruguay? or 1890 France? - 1935)

Carlos Gardel is the most prominent figure in tango history. He revolutionised the sound of tango when it started to stagnate in the early 1900's. With his life cut-short in a 1935 airplane crash, his famous golden voice become his legacy.

Teaching and interpreting TANGO in line with tradition

After teaching for a decade, Mimi and Teddy's recent trip to Argentina gained them recognition as certified Tango Maestros by Escuela Argentina De Tango in Buenos Aires.

They were the Australian teachers amongst other countries like England, Greece, Brazil, Venezuela, France, Italy, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland and USA.

As part of a professional networking team, the teachers exchanged ideas and experiences with the aim to preserve the tradition of Tango.
Mimi and Teddy feel very strongly about emphasising these important aspects in their teaching.
