Welcome to a little buenos aires

A Little Buenos Aires creates places for people to learn and enjoy Argentine Tango music and dancing. Founded by Mimi and Teddy in 2000, it’s one of Sydney’s longest established tango schools and social event organisers for this genre.

Mimi and Teddy are accomplished teachers, being accredited ‘Il Master para Maestros de Tango’ by the Escuela Argentina de Tango in Buenos Aires. They have dedicated decades of their life collaborating with International Maestros and Maestras. Mimi and Teddy are well-regarded for their teaching methods around musicality and individuality. Over many years, they have accumulated a rare collection of music which is played at their Milongas (social events) to create a little piece of Buenos Aires in Sydney, Australia.

What we offer

A Little Buenos Aires tango workshops, classes and private lessons accomodate for all levels of dancers. From total beginners through to advanced choreography, our experienced teachers focus on individual progress and ability.

A Little Buenos Aires is known for their traditional monthly ‘Milonga’- tango social nights. These signature events are popular for its music, elegance and friendliness, attracting dancers from across Sydney, NSW and interstate. Weekly Milongas offer a dose of tango to meet and socialise with other dancers in a casual setting. Everyone is welcome!

Learn Tango the authentic way with our dual-teaching method (male and female instructors). Tango classes and workshops are offered in Sydney's north and cater for total beginners to experienced dancers. Focus on individual progress and musicality.

Traditional Monthly Milonga

As part of the tango tradition, social interaction is as important as learning. It's a place where friendships flourish with a common love for tango. Our weekly and monthly Milongas are known as friendly places to tango with great music and atmosphere.

The Argentine tango

The Argentine Tango has its roots on the streets and dance halls of Buenos Aires in the mid 19th century. Rich in history and culture, the tango is an art form that is still danced and enjoyed across the globe. In recognition for its cultural significance, the Argentinean Tango was granted UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status in 2009.

Argentine Tango music has a very distinct sound. It can be played by guitar or as a full ensemble ‘orchestra tipica’ which includes the accordion like instrument associated with Tango called the ‘bandoneon‘. The bandoneon produces the unique sound of which Tango is typically recognised. Tango music can be described as three main rhythms – Tango, Milonga (fast and upbeat), Tango Vals (flowing).

Dancers improvise to the music and their ability to interpret the music into movements is called musicality. ‘Salon Tango’ is danced in a close embrace and is what tangueros dance in a ‘Milonga’ (social dancing) for personal enjoyment. Taking this to the next level is ‘Stage Tango’, or show tango, that is danced to entertain an audience. It’s a choreographed display of dynamic tango techniques including swift kicks and lifts.
